Beechworth Chinese Gardens

The Beechworth Chinese Gardens are a short walk from the Beechworth Post Office and they are open 7days a week.

The Beechworth Chinese Gardens were planned to celebrate Beechworth’s Chinese Heritage. They are a place for people to sit, read and enjoy the surrounds. These gardens have been designed using the principle of Feng Shui living in harmony with the surrounds. The gardens, are an ongoing community project initiated by The North East Branch of the Australia-China Friendship Society in 1998.

Today the Beechworth Chinese Cultural Centre and Garden Inc coordinate and support the management and the Development of the gardens through grants and festivals with support from Indigo Shire Council and the Lake Sambell Committee of Management.

May Day Hills Heritage Gardens

The magnificent heritage gardens of May Day Hills at Beechworth are open daily to the public from dawn to dusk.

They were started back in the mid-19th century with the building of the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum. The gardens cover over 11 hectares and are noted by the National Trust as Victorian Gardens of Significance. Original plantings thought to have been donated by the Royal Botanical gardens, Melbourne include the Bunya Pines and the magnificent 50 metre tall Douglas Fir.

One of the best way to experience this beautiful and peaceful heritage site is by taking the time to complete the self-guided walking tour. This fascinating tour takes visitors around the historic precinct and surrounds of the old Mayday Hills Hospital or Beechworth Lunatic Asylum as it was originally named. The historic walking wour has fifteen interpretive storyboards located around the site for your interest.

Beechworth Town Hall Gardens

The Beechworth Town Hall Gardens were given life by noted 19th century botanist, Baron Ferdinand von Muller, who sent trees and seeds from the Royal Botanical Gardens in Melbourne.

These gardens have been open public space since 1857. The rotunda, fountain and two urns are in their original positions, dating from 1876. Many trees from the original plantings are on the National Trust Significant Tree Register. A story board has been erected on site with information about these historical gardens.

Queen Victoria Park

Queen Victoria Park is walking distance from the town centre. You will find free electric BBQs, covered eating area, outside picnic tables, play ground, public toilets and off road parking.

In the centre of the park there is an extremely large rock used by many Beechworth children as a slide. On top of the rock two world war guns have been mounted. In Ford Street you will find a Rotunda get for picnics.
